A Tribute to Etta James

It is with great sadness that the singer of one of the most romantic wedding songs of our time passed away today. Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the mid 1950s, she gained fame with hits such as "Dance With Me, Henry", "At Last", "Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind". Regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, she is also the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. Etta was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Rolling Stone ranked her number 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists. My thoughts are with her family at this difficult time. Here's a video of Etta … [Read more...]

Hampshire Engagement Shoot: Carly & Mark

Hampshire Wedding Photographer Engagement Shoot

Carly and Mark have hired me to photograph their wedding at Highfield Park in June and I'm really looking forward to it. As part of all my wedding photography packages I offer a complimentary engagement or pre wedding shoot which gives us an opportunity to get to know each other better and also helps my couples to relax in front of the camera. It helps the photography to run more smoothly on the wedding day because we've spent time together beforehand and you've had a practise run at posing in front of the camera. You also get to choose your favourite image from the engagement/pre wedding shoot which will be professionally printed and mounted ready for your guests to write comments on at your wedding. Ideally I would have waited until the weather warmed up a bit for Carly and Mark's engagement shoot but Mark's job is taking him abroad for six months, right up until the wedding so we put our coats on and headed for Southsea seafront in Hampshire. Oh my word! It was freezing! The wind … [Read more...]

Buchannan Events Marquee Hire

Hampshire Wedding Photographer

At the moment I'm busy putting an album together for my friend who's wedding I photographed in the summer. Lizzie and Simon have now chosen the images they want to include in their album and as I arrange the photos on each page, the whole day comes flooding back. Lizzie and Simon opted for a vintage inspired tea party in a marquee in her parent's field in Sway. It was a very hot day and the marquee looked stunning in the field of long grass with purple and yellow flowers which Lizzie's dad had left to grow for the occasion. One of the things I loved about photographing this wedding was the natural light available. The marquee was light and airy and with the sun shining, cast a creamy, buttery light over all the gorgeous china and other details Lizzie had sourced for her wedding. It all looks so pretty. One of the reasons Lizzie and Simon opted to hire a marquee for their wedding reception was because it allowed them more freedom with their day, they didn't have any restrictions about … [Read more...]

Personal Post: The Sky Swing – Rotorua New Zealand

Last Sunday I wrote about my trip to New Zealand back in 2007 and how my Kiwi family came to visit in July this year. Anyway, I was looking through some old posts on Facebook and found a video I uploaded of my crazy adventure on the Sky Swing in Rotorua, New Zealand. This clip is from December 2007 and features me on the right and two of my younger cousins. You can tell by my voice and my nervous laugh that I didn't like it much... I was so nervous that I forgot I had an 8 year old sat next to me and wasn't really thinking about what I was saying. By the way, that huge beaming smile on my face after the first swing is the immense relief I felt when I realised that the cage stayed connected to the crane and didn't go flying off over the mountain side. Trust me, once is definitely enough! Happy Saturday everyone! … [Read more...]

Pre – Wedding Photography at Lainston House Hampshire

Hampshire Wedding Photography at Lainston House

I first met Ricky and Louise at a wedding fayre earlier this year and I'm pleased to say they hired me to photograph their wedding in October. As part of all my wedding packages I offer a complimentary engagement or pre - wedding photography shoot. This is a great way for me to get to know the couple better and also helps them to feel at ease with me and relax in front of the camera. Ricky and Lousie have chosen to get married at the exquisite Lainston House in Hampshire and chose to have their pre-wedding photographs taken in the grounds. This enabled us to share ideas about the wedding photography on the day and together we sought out locations for photographs. Louise was keen to have photos taken during the 'golden hour' before the sun went down and after last week's cloud and rain we weren't sure if there would be any sun at all... but we kept an eye on the weather and arranged a time to meet and I think Louise might just have got her wish :) Ricky and Louise make a lovely couple … [Read more...]
